Accepted engineering control measures are to be used to accomplish this (for example, enclosure or confinement of the operation, general and local ventilation, and substitution of less toxic materials). When effective engineering controls are not feasible or sufficient, or while they are being instituted, OSHA requires that employees use appropriate respirators. When your employees need respirators to do their jobs, setting up an effective respirator safety program is essential. The Respiratory Protection regulation (29 CFR 1910.134) establishes uniform guidelines for protecting your workers when they must work in hazardous atmospheres.

Respirator Fit Test – 1 hour

OSHA 1910.134 Qualitative Fit Testing is a pass or fail assessment of the adequacy of a respirator. A qualitative fit test determines whether or not someone can detect various scents or flavors or can experience a negative reaction to a substance that can cause burning, watering eyes. A qualitative fit test is a pass or fail test that relies on the employee's response to a test agent. The testing agent that will be administered is Bitrex (a bitter solution). For the Bitrex test, the test administrator challenges a subject wearing a respirator with a sensitivity test. Then the subject dons the respirator and a fit test hood. The test aerosol (Bitrex) is sprayed inside the hood while the subject performs prescribed exercises. If the subject can taste the test agent, the respirator fails the test and another respirator must be tested. Prior to conducting the test, the administrator must determine if the subject can detect the test agent. If the subject can’t detect the test agent, another one that can be detected must be used. The fit test procedure requires about 20 minutes.

*A Respiratory Initial Medical Questionnaire will be completed prior to the fit test being administered (an additional Pulmonary test may be required) and the individual must bring the Respirator to be tested on. The test individual must refrain from eating, drinking and smoking for at least 15 minutes prior to the test being administered.
