    Free Point/Backoff Operations

Renegade has the equipment and knowledge to quickly free stuck pipe or tools

When pipe or tools become stuck in the well, it can quickly become one of the costliest challenges an operator is faced with. Until the problem is resolved, other issues including delayed drilling, increased NPT and additional expenses for equipment and crew become critical. When this problem occurs, you need a company that provides fast response, safe operations and a knowledgeable crew with the best equipment.

Quickly determining the stuck point, loosening or severing the stuck string and then recovering as much of the stuck tool or string as possible is imperative to get wellsite operations going again. Renegade has the equipment, personnel and experience to provide the solution when your toolstring or pipe becomes stuck.

For successful pipe recovery and stuck tool operations you must first determine the free point of the tool or pipe. The free point is the depth at which the tubing, casing or tool that is stuck in the borehole is free to move. This will be the point at which recovery operations can begin.

Renegade’s free point tool provides vital information that aids in cutter type selection and helps identify the location to separate pipe. Always ran with a CCL, the free point tool is first positioned at a known free spot to set up the tool and check proper tool functionality.

A sensor picks up movement in the assembly associated with tension, compression or torque. This signal is sent to a surface free point panel for display and recording. Renegade specialists continue the process until zero movement is detected by the sensors.

Next the connection or pipe must be severed to pull the remaining string out of the hole. This can be accomplished by applying a ‘back off’ or reverse torque and at the same time detonating an explosive charge inside the nearest string connection.

    Circulating Pyro Torch

Effective operations when annular flow is required for the Radial Cutting Torch

MCR Oil Tool’s circulating pyro torch was developed using the same principles as the successful and field-proven radial cutting torch (RCT) system. However, in some conditions, adequate flow into the annulus is required when executing a successful RCT job. Explosive perforators and punchers are not reliable at producing consistent holes that provide sufficient flow, having a dramatic effect on success when cutting with the RCT. The circulating pyro torch delivers the required annular flow prior to cutting and provides a consistent and reliable punch in coil tubing, casing, and drill pipe. By utilizing the latest in MCR’s proprietary non-explosive, non-hazmat rated fuel technology, you can complete your job faster and safer than ever before.

    • Non-explosive
    • Non-hazmat rated fuel
    • Radio safe
    • Operates in temperatures up to 500°F (260°C) and pressures up to 25,000 psi (172.4 MPa)
    • Perforates all steel, high chrome, and plastic-coated tubulars
    • Perforates in exotic fluids or dry pipe
    • Single/dual perforations in sizes from 0.38 in 2 to 7.0 in 2
    • Deployable within hours and not days
    • Minimizes downtime and associated costs

    Operation

All Renegade operators are trained and certified by MCR for proper tool operation for safe and efficient operations.

MCR’s circulating pyro torch assembly is lowered into the well to the desired depth. MCR’s thermal generator ignites and activates the primary fuel load causing an increase in internal pressure. Following internal pressure rise, plasma exits the torch which perforates the target pipe. By design, the CPT cutting jet forces the tool against the wall of the pipe; the high frictional forces between the CPT and the wall of the pipe are greater than the thrust forces exerted by the pressure bubble, stabilizing the perforator to make the cut. It is this feature that allows MCR’s perforators to function properly in plugged pipe situations.

    Radial Cutting Torch

Safe, effective operations to sever tubing, casing, drill pipe or coiled tubing

MCR Oil Tool’s radial cutting torch (RCT) is a patented cutting device used to sever tubing, casing, drill pipe, and coiled tubing without the use of explosives or hazardous materials, making it one of the safest pipe cutting tools on the market. Using advanced technology, the patented nozzle and proprietary mixture of various powdered metals produces jets of highly energized plasma to cut virtually any type of pipe in any well environment. Because the RCT does not use explosives or hazardous chemicals, the tool can be shipped almost anywhere in the world within 24 hours, saving significant time and associated costs, while remaining compliant with safety regulations.

    Operation

All Renegade operators are trained and certified by MCR for proper tool operation for safe and efficient operations.

The RCT assembly is lowered into the well until the desired depth is reached. MCR’s thermal generator ignites and activates the primary fuel load; highly energized plasma is produced causing an increase in internal pressure. Once the pressure exceeds that of the wellbore, the protective sleeve is displaced exposing the nozzle to the wellbore. Plasma exits through the nozzle to sever the targeted tubing, casing, drill pipe or coiled tubing in wellbore temperatures up to 500°F (260°C) and pressures to 20,000 psi (137.9 MPa).

»The stuck pipe log is deployed from our standard logging unit and can be run through drill pipe, casing or tubing.

    Stuck Pipe Log

When wellsite problems occur, Renegade has the full range of options to successfully free stuck pipe.

The stuck pipe log uses acoustic measurement techniques to provide a continuous record and evaluation of a stuck pipe string. This logging service can be performed through drill pipe, casing, or tubing to identify problem areas.

Acoustic pulses, initiated at the instrument’s transmitter, travel through the pipe string and are measured at the receiver. The acoustic energy level at the receiver is proportional to the degree of stuck pipe. Similar to conventional cement bond logging measurements, low attenuation readings indicate free pipe and high attenuation readings indicate stuck pipe.

The stuck pipe log is superior to free point evaluation because the stuck pipe log is used to determine multiple stuck points throughout the well instead of just the first problem area. With a complete picture of the situation, an informed decision and subsequent pipe recovery plan can be devised, saving time and money.

    • Piezoelectric crystals used in transmitters and receivers

The jet cutter is the fastest and most economical method to cut tubing or casing.

Chemical Cutters use high-pressure bromine trifluoride acid to cleanly cut the pipe.

    Stuck Pipe Log

Provides a continuous record and evaluation of a stuck pipe string. It can be used through drill pipe, casing or tubing to identify problem areas in harsh environments up to 450°F (232°C) and 20,000 psi (138 MPa). Renegade provides a complete understanding of the situation, so an informed decision and pipe recovery plan can be put in place.

    COMPLETE CONVEYANCE SYSTEMS FROM RENEGADE

SLICKLINE, BRAIDED LINE AND ELINE SERVICES FOR ANY APPLICATION

Once a well is producing, certain practices must be performed to maintain production in addition to identifying and correcting problems that can impede production. Selecting the right process and executing correctly, selecting the best equipment, and experienced wellsite personnel can all make a huge difference in the cost and time of a project. Selecting the conveyance method to deploy these operations is one example.

    • Renegade crews are trained to run the full range of services, regardless of the conveyance method. We make sure our crews are cross-trained with experience on both slickline units and eLine units. Most of our crews have 10+ years’ experience.
    • Sour line services available for work in H2S and CO2 environments
    • Greaseless line for environmentally-friendly, pump-down operations
    • Special units available with reels containing both braided and slickline
    • Renegade has experience running all types of line — slickline, braided, eLine or a combination, since 2009

Renegade offers slickline, braided line, eLine or a combination of these options for any wellsite application.

    SLICKLINE OPERATIONS

Slickline is a non-conductor, single-strand wire used to perform many different remedial and mechanical services on producing wells. It is made of mild steel, ranging in diameter from 0.072 in. to greater than 0.125 in. These tools are generally used for setting plugs, running memory gauges and other mechanical services. Slickline is a small line that packs a big punch. It is strong and durable and can be run rapidly in and out of a wellbore allowing operators to quickly collect valuable well data.

    BRAIDED LINE OPERATIONS

Braided line is a non-conductive, twisted braid of multiple steel wires. Braided line is strong and durable and useful in numerous applications such as fishing operations and swabbing fluid from a well. In a producing well, the hydrostatic pressure sometimes overcomes the formation pressure, causing well fluid to slow. The result: decreased overall production from the well. Braided wire is capable of quickly removing the overburden of fluid in the well to help resume production.

    ELINE OPERATIONS

Some areas use single-conductor electric wireline, known as small line or eLine, for traditional slickline service. Eline adds a level of versatility not found in slickline or braided line. Renegade Services uses an electric line to provide the most accurate data-gathering capabilities possible. The insulated cable is surrounded by multiple strands of wire called armors. This conductive wire allows electrical signals to be sent downhole to initiate tool activities and retrieve well data in real time.

» The small footprint of the full electric drive unit does not take up valuable rig space.

Renegade introduces new Full Electric Drive Wireline Truck for customers in the Northeast

Efficiency, performance and regulatory compliance all in a compact unit

Today, companies are being challenged to evaluate their environmental footprint as part of a long-term ESG strategy. One example recently occurred when Renegade Wireline Services and Benchmark Wireline Products teamed up to convert an existing Renegade Bulldog unit into an electric unit. For use in areas where many customers are now requiring electric fleets on the job site, the new Full Electric Drive Wireline Truck will bring more efficient operations to the wellsite and provide quieter operations while lessening the impact on the environment. The unit will also help meet strict regulatory requirements that are mandatory for some areas. While electric units at the rigsite are not a new idea, they have recently become more common due to several advantages.

    • More efficient
    • Lessens the environmental impact
    • Less noise
    • Meets regulatory requirements in some areas
» The unit features many automatic controls and displays.

The trend is that for future use, all wireline units will be required to be electric. This is another example of Renegade bringing technology to the wellsite the customer has asked for.

Designed specifically for customers whose wells have a small footprint, Renegade’s Full Electric Drive Wireline unit can fit where other units cannot without taking up valuable rigsite space. Although there are competitor units available, they are larger in size, cost much more and are size-prohibitive for well sites with a small footprint. The Renegade unit was designed with the customer in mind to accommodate small locations.

Some of the features of this new unit include:

    • Auto Surface Shutdown
    • Auto Over-tension Shutdown
    • Auto Target Depth Tie-In and Shutdown
    • Automatic Torque Control Adjustment
    • Automatic Cable Oiler (optional)
    • Visual Alarm Settings
    • Hoist Controller with Can Buss Interface

Benefits to the service company include increased operational efficiency.

    • No diesel fuel is required on location assuming there is AC power on location.
    • There is reduced wear and tear on the equipment, especially on pump-down operations where the engine can be running for long periods of time. The unit motor is only used for transport from one location to another.
    • Fewer moving parts except for the winch. No pumps, no PTO, etc. All replaced with electric power.
    • The combination of an electric unit and AC power on location can result in a zero-carbon footprint.

    Leak Detection

Experience and innovation provide the means to successfully identify leaks and fluid flow

Renegade Leak Detection Services identifies leaks and fluid flow direction in annulus, casing or tubulars without the need to deploy mechanical devices such as spinner tools downhole.

Renegade’s experience with our proven tracer technologies for frac operations, and injection profiles mean we can devise the right combination of tools, RA material and expertise for any leak detection operation.

Leaks present in any pipe string that you can pump into can be tested with this same process utilized by our proven injection profile service. Compliance is often required by state regulations on disposal wells to ensure all injected fluid is leaving the well in the permitted zones and is not channeling up to higher intervals. Trial runs before pumping cement can also be performed to ensure abandonment procedures are met and cement locations are approved by state authorities.

Injection Profiles are run to find and measure out-of-zone losses, monitor fluid dispersion and provide a comprehensive picture of the overall downhole activity. This service can identify leaks, including packer leaks and holes in tubing where there are no perforations. Renegade’s injection profiles provide the confidence to efficiently tackle problem-well situations that can commonly cost much more and take longer to complete.  read more

Radioactive Tracer Log uses RA tracer material to detect channels or leaks that can indicate the precise location and rate of fluid loss.

Temperature Log Temperature variations indicate fluid loss to help identify channels and prove fluid entry points.

Gamma Ray and CCL Logs are used in both open hole and casing to correlate job to the proper depth, provide depth control for future jobs, identify natural radioactivity in the formation and identify collars, packers and casing shoes.

Renegade: The pioneers of RigLock®, the original hands-free, remote hydraulic wellhead latch assembly (HWLA)

Remove the person from the risk

Renegade Services continues to innovate and implement new levels of wellsite efficiency and safety with the RigLock remote hydraulic wellhead latch assembly. Developed in conjunction with FHS, RigLock removes wellsite personnel from dangerous situations handling heavy, cumbersome equipment at heights near high-pressure lines.

Riglock is a hydraulically-controlled, remote operation device that can connect the lubricator to the well with the flip of a switch. It allows you to remotely connect and disconnect the wireline lubricator. RigLock uses hydraulically operated dogs that lock the lubricator in place and a lockdown ring that mechanically holds the dogs in place. The position of the lockdown ring can be seen from anywhere on location. It also uses a built-in funnel to make it very simple for a crane operator to make a connection.

RigLock utilizes a tapered wedge/spring design and a hydraulically actuated lock ring resulting in industry-leading standards of safety and remote wellsite management sophistication not available with current systems. Crews work from a safe distance, away from the red zone, with but with clear visibility of connection or disconnection operations.

Previously frac operations required the nightcap to be removed manually from the frac tree to stab the wireline lubricator onto the well. This involved a person working on a lift, manually performing the operations. This was done in an exclusion zone, directly underneath a suspended load with hands on the equipment being lifted. RigLock removes the person from the risk.

    • Extractor feature can pull and insert the nightcap remotely.
    • Decreases time it takes to stab onto the well from 25 minutes to only eight minutes.
    • During zipper fracs, wireline operations can proceed from one to well to another while pumping operations continue uninterrupted.

      Compensated Neutron Log

A compensated neutron log is useful for identifying zones of interest and determining perforating depths, tracking gas cap movement and gas encroachment under shale layers, as a correlation between open and cased hole where a gamma ray is not indicative, and to measure overall porosity of the well. At Renegade we primarily use the compensated neutron log (CNL) to identify pay zones in a well. Once the zones of interest are identified and logged, the engineer can make an informed decision on perforation placement.

      Gamma Ray Log

The Gamma Ray Log measures total natural radioactivity and is displayed in American Petroleum Institute (API) units. The measurement can be made in both openhole and through casing. Shales and clay are responsible for most natural radioactivity, so the gamma ray log is often a good indicator of such rock. The log is also used for correlation between wells, for depth correlation between open and cased hole, and for depth correlation between logging runs.

      Spectral Gamma Ray Tool

Spectral Gamma Ray Tool provides information about the mineralogy of formations, specifically the source of a particular gamma ray by measuring the amplitude or energy level. Since the most frequent sources of natural radiation in the formation are thorium, uranium and potassium, the tool can measure the amount of each in shale and sand formations.

      • Provides detailed stratigraphic correlation
      • Identifies depositional environments
      • Determines clay type analysis and volume
      • Heavy mineral identification

The tool utilizes a large, ruggedized scintillation detector to measure the quantity of naturally occurring potassium, uranium and thorium. The total gamma spectrum is resolved into 256 channels internally and used to determine the components of naturally occurring radiation in sands and shales. This data is used to distinguish important features of the clay or sand around the wellbore formation such as clay volume, clay type, heavy minerals and is also used for fracture detection.

The detector package is designed to maximize the energy spectra sensitivity over the entire range of energy levels and logging speeds encountered in various formations. The tool uses an automatic internal stabilization circuit to stabilize the detector and electronics for temperature drift errors over the entire operating temperature range.

      Injection Profile Logging (IPL)

Fluid Flow Data From Injection Wells Provide Insight on Overall Well Construction Integrity

As a field matures the need for injection profile data from injection wells increases. Running injection profiles eliminates assumptions of fluid direction providing an overall view of well performance and integrity, allowing operators to map their water or CO2 flood.

Renegade Injection Profile Logging (IPL) checks the integrity of overall well construction on injection wells. Profiles are run to determine the health of injector units, monitor fluid dispersion, find and measure out-of-zone losses and provide a comprehensive picture of the overall downhole activity on an injector. This service can identify leaks out of the zones’ injection area, including packer leaks and holes in tubing where there are no perforations.

The shut-in portion of the injection profile log can provide customers insight into areas of fluid storage and communications between high- and low-pressure zones. Renegade’s injection profiles provide the confidence to efficiently tackle problem-well situations that can commonly cost much more and take longer to complete. Services are typically run every four years for water wells and two years for CO2 wells.

IPL has two advantages over traditional mechanical services such as spinner tools. First, it can observe fluid movement behind pipe; second, they eliminate the risk of blades sticking if wellbore debris is encountered. In some instances, RA tracers may be the only way to identify and locate problem areas in the well. Renegade utilizes innovative equipment and tools and has an in-house RA lab to mix RA material for specific volume and job needs.

      Cement Bond Integrity and Evaluation

      The Renegade Difference

Along with casing, cement is the backbone of the wellbore. A good cement job protects the formation and the water table, prevents leakage from the wellbore into the formation and provides the structure that supports the completions hardware. It is one of the most critical components of a producing well.

Renegade provides services that monitor the health of the cement and cement bond to both formation and pipe. Our tools identify problems that could ultimately affect well integrity. If problems are found, we can recommend and carry out immediate remediation services that can prevent greater failures if not addressed.

      • Unmatched data quality with over hundreds of data points per foot, even at logging speeds over 100 ft per minute.
      • Shorter tool lengths reduce the risk of damage to the wellbore or the environment.
      • Provides cement evaluation, casing wear and casing thickness information, corrosion imaging and fluid properties in the wellbore.
      • Identifies micro-annulus to shut off service casing vent flow.
      • Can log environments up to 350°F and 20,000 psi.
      • Tools can be combined to run in stack configurations (cement bond, gamma ray, CCL, caliper, magnetic thickness) for greater time savings on workover and drilling rigs.

      Radial Cement Bond Log

The radial cement bond tool utilizes a single ceramic transmitter, an eight-segment receiver at 3-ft spacing and a single receiver at 5-ft spacing to accurately measure the quality of the cement job in a cased hole well environment. The segmented receiver provides a good indication of cement channeling behind the casing.
