CASE STUDY:

PENNSYLVANIA DEP GRANTS PERMISSION FOR OPERATOR TO P&A WELL AFTER EXPANSION SERVICE

CONDITION:

This Pennsylvania well was scheduled for plug and abandonment, however, gas flow in the annulus prevented the operator from starting the process. All gas migration and pressure had to be eliminated before the Pennsylvania Department of Environment Protection (DEP) would let P&A operations commence. Previous attempts at stopping the gas flow with traditional squeeze cement jobs proved unsuccessful.

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION:

The operator contacted Renegade Services. After reviewing well problems, Renegade recommended its Local Expander technology, which expands the casing into the cement and blocks the path of any unwanted gas flow.

SOLUTION & RESULTS:

Utilizing Local Expander technology, Renegade created two sets of three expansions. The first set of expansions was performed at depths of 3369, 3370 and 3371 ft while the second set was at 2069, 2070 and 2071 ft, successfully sealing the annulus. The gas rate dropped from 1.5 mscf/day to zero flow after five days while the pressure rate decreased from 105 psi to zero psi after 14 days. Upon reviewing these successful results, the Pennsylvania DEP granted permission for the operator to P&A the well.

» Decrease in both pressure and gas rate to zero show the effectiveness of Local Expander technology and allowed the operator to P&A the well.

Local Expander™ CASE STUDY:

DECREASE IN BACKSIDE PRESSURE ALLOWS OPERATOR TO RETURN SEVEN WELLS TO PRODUCTION

CONDITION:

This operator in Pennsylvania had an issue with backside pressure on several wells. The pressure was causing gas to flow up the annulus between the casing and cement. The gas flow exceeded limits set by the state for maximum gas flow. The operator had to stop production on the wells until the problem was addressed.

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION:

Renegade Services was called in to evaluate the wells and recommended the Local Expander™ tool to shut off the gas flow. Local Expander unique technology expands the casing into the cement, densifying the cement and stopping upward gas flow. The wells were at two locations, with one pad containing five wells and the second pad containing two wells. Pre-job well pressure ranged from 130 psi to 680 psi on the seven wells.

SOLUTION & RESULTS:

The Local Expander provided a successful remedy decreasing the unwanted gas flow. Renegade performed 12 expansions (four sets of three expansions) on each well. Upon reviewing the successful results, the Pennsylvania Department of Environment Protection (DEP) granted permission for the operator to return the well to production. With the success of these wells, the operator engaged Renegade and the Local Expander on ten more wells.

» Candidate selection is a critical factor in obtaining effective and consistent Local Expander results. Factors such as expansion depth, the number of expansions and cement quality all will affect the success of the Local Expander service on individual wells.

The Renegade Local Expander Tool eliminates annular gas flow that has hindered operations for over four years.

EXPANDABLE TECHNOLOGY SOLVES PROBLEM IN HOURS

Annular Gas leaks originating from sub surface cementing problems continue to be a monumental problem for operators worldwide. New technology has now been proven on hundreds of wells in multiple countries to successfully and permanently seal and correct the micro annular leaks and stop gas flows to surface. The below case history and accompanying VIDEO illustrate one challenge faced by an operator and the innovative technology that successfully solved the problem.

A breech in the 9-5/8-in. casing caused an annular leak that allowed gas to flow into this well located in the Marcellus Shale in the U.S. The well included a 16,000 ft lateral section and the annulus to be isolated was 5-1/2-in. The 5-1/2-in. casing was cut close to surface leaving a stub that presented the opportunity to view the annular gas leak in a novel perspective. A small downhole camera captured the gas flow, indicated by persistent natural gas bubbles entering the well through leaks in the annular cemented casing. This problem had been challenging this operator for over four years!

After quickly evaluating the problem and reviewing well details, Renegade presented the following solution utilizing the Local Expander™ Annular Squeeze Tool: 18 casing expansions in six sequences within the vertical shallow section of the 5.5-in. casing were made to completely isolate the 9-5/8-in. by 5-1/2-in. annulus.

The results were immediate, with 80 to 90 percent of the gas flow cut after the first set of expansions were completed. After applying three additional expansion sequences, the gas leak was shut off 100 percent. The total job was completed in a six hour intervention.

The Renegade Local Expander has been successfully used to seal annular gas flow on over 320 well interventions in the U.S., Canada and around the world. This technology stops the flow from behind the casing and the resulting harmful emissions from reaching the atmosphere. The result is a permanent well repair that does not affect casing integrity. Contact Renegade today at [email protected] to find out more about this proven technology.

Visual results of blocked stages allow removal of blockage and resumed flow from toe to heel

Renegade Diagnostic Technologies conducted tracer analysis on horizontal wells with extended lateral sections for a Permian Basin operator. The resulting graph identified a blockage around Stages 9 and 10 resulting in no tracers or production returning from toe area of the well.

The operator utilized this critical analysis to clean out the well and remove the blockage. This data played a crucial role in determining a solution that ensured the full well bore returned to production. Additionally, the same tracer technology can be employed for operators using dissolvable plugs to ensure full well bore contribution without the need for mechanical cleaning of the well.

ANALYZING RADIOACTIVE TRACER STIMULATION DATA TO DETERMINE FRAC STAGE PERFORMANCE

To provide well performance data to a Permian Basin operator, Renegade conducted a radioactive tracer analysis on Stages 1 through 6 at depths ranging from 4,850 to 3,450 ft. The results indicated that Stages 1, 3 and 5 achieved 100% perf cluster stimulation. Stage 2 showed only 37.5% perf cluster stimulation while Stage 4 indicated 50% effective perf cluster stimulation.

Data revealed that not all perf clusters or stages yielded the same results, as some perf clusters may not perform as expected. Furthermore, the oil tracer data emphasized that the zones stimulated more effectively resulted in the best production.

Renegade’s line of post-frac logging tools, known as S.W.A.T. Spectral Well Analysis Technology, is designed to detect and characterize radioactive isotopes. These tools are available in a 1-11/16-inch OD configuration, providing both real-time and memory data options.

In conclusion, the radioactive tracer and oil tracer technologies helped the operator make changes to the stimulation design perf cluster placement selection, and interval selection.

Downhole InSigh NuWav Camera Uncovers Failed Packer Retrieval

CONDITION:

During the pre-deployment phase of well operations, an operator found they could not retrieve a packer set in 5-1/2-in. casing at 3789 ft. After several unsuccessful attempts to latch on to the packer with a retrieval tool and mills and wash pipe, they determined a visual view of the downhole environment was needed.

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION:

A downhole camera system would provide the most effective method to confirm the condition of the top of the packer and check casing integrity. Renegade’s NuWAV™ Camera, part of its’ Downhole InSight™ suite of tools, was deployed while circulating with fresh water down the 2-7/8-in. tubing. NuWAV provides real time video images of downhole activity over mono- or multi-conductor wireline. NUWAV visually confirmed that both packer and 5-1/2-in. casing had been milled in half at 3789 ft.

SOLUTION and RESULTS:

With conclusive visual evidence from the NuWAV camera, the customer was able to confidently determine an action plan and tool selection that would allow wellsite operations to continue. The customer was very satisfied with Renegade’s NuWAV camera operation; subsequent steps taken stopped critical NPT and alleviated the risk of further well issues. Additionally, the camera was able to identify a problem with the top of the packer and a window that was cut in casing. If not identified, these areas could cause problems when additional services are attempted, such as running in or out of the well or completing the well.

Downhole InSight NuWave Caerma identifies obstructions in the well, descreasing cirtical NPT for the customer

CHALLENGE:

During the pre-deployment phase of well operations, an operator found that although the well was circulating, there was an object stuck inside the casing. The operator identified an obstruction at 7,140 ft and needed to confirm that the integrity of the casing at that depth was not compromised. After several unsuccessful attempts to pass the obstruction with wedges and mills they concluded a visual camera was needed downhole.

SOLUTION:

It was determined a downhole camera system would be the most effective way of confirming the obstruction. Renegades NuWAV Camera, part of its’ Downhole InSight suite of tools, was deployed while circulating with 10.0 ppg brine. NuWAV provides real time video images of downhole activity over mono- or multi-conductor wireline. NUWAV visually confirmed the casing was both obstructed at 7,135 ft and collapsed with the casing stub below. Visible threads indicated that the pin end of the casing was broken and laying across the stub.

RESULTS:

With conclusive visual evidence from the NuWAV camera, the customer was able to confidently mill the threaded debris, re-enter the stub and continue wellsite operations. The action by Renegade stopped critical NPT and alleviated the risk of further well issues. Additionally, the camera was able to identify large debris, as well as identifying possible areas of concern that could present tight spots during drilling, running casing, or completing the well.

Downhold InSight NuWAV Camera identifies collapsed casing, helps customer determine well repair plans.

CHALLENGE:

An operator in the middle of a new project called after encountering challenges preventing them from forward progress. Although the well would circulate, the operator suspected that remedial efforts/operations had gotten outside of the casing and needed to verify whether fishing operations were inside or outside of the casing at around 3330 ft

SOLUTION AND RESULTS:

Renegade recommended running tubing to the area of interest and deploying the camera down the tubing simultaneous to circulating. The camera run determined that the casing had collapsed causing fishing efforts to side-track into open hole at 3328 ft and that the casing split open with the tubing inside at 3333 ft. With these visual diagnostics, the operator had confidence to move forward with reduced risk.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS:

The operator was able to inspect other problem areas of the wellbore while running in to inspect the location of the fish. The operator was able to save on additional NPT relating to additional fishing operations. In this case, the operator saved approximately $10,000 a day relating to NPT.

Renegade introduces new Full Electric Drive Wireline Truck for customers in the Northeast

Today, companies are being challenged to evaluate their environmental footprint as part of long-term ESG strategy. One example recently occurred when Renegade Wireline Services and Benchmark Wireline Products teamed up to convert an existing Renegade Bulldog unit into an electric unit. For use in the northeast, where many customers are now requiring electric fleets on the job site, the unit will be housed in Pennsylvania during field introduction. While electric units at the rigsite are not a new idea, they have recently become more common due to several advantages.

  • More efficient
  • Lessens the environmental impact
  • Less noise
  • Meets regulatory requirements in some areas

Local Expander Renegade

First Renegade full electric drive wireline unit.

Designed specifically for customers whose wells have a small footprint, Renegade’s Full Electric Drive Wireline unit can fit where other units cannot without taking up valuable rigsite space. Although there are competitor units available, they are larger in size, cost much more and are size-prohibitive for well sites with a small footprint. The Renegade unit was designed with the customer in mind to accommodate small locations.

Randy Cassady, Renegade Owner and Vice President of Operations commented, “In the future there will be very few diesel units, whether new builds or retrofits. I think all wireline units will be required to be electric. Renegade has always been in the forefront of bringing technology that the customer has asked for and this is just one more example.”

“We had worked with Benchmark in the past. They provided a measuring system we use in the field, but this was the first time we worked with them to retrofit a unit,“ Cassady added. “Our sales team is lining up customers to test the new unit. If the economics work out, more units will be converted.”

Some of the features of this new unit include:

  • Auto Surface Shutdown
  • Auto Over-tension Shutdown
  • Auto Target Depth Tie-In and Shutdown
  • Automatic Torque Control Adjustment
  • Automatic Cable Oiler (optional)
  • Visual Alarm Settings
  • Hoist Controller with Can Buss Interface

Benefits to the service company include increased operational efficiency.

  • No diesel fuel is required on location assuming there is AC power on location.
  • There is reduced wear and tear on the equipment, especially on pump-down operations where the engine can be running for long periods of time. The unit motor is only used for transport from one location to another.
  • Fewer moving parts except for the winch. No pumps, no PTO, etc. All replaced with electric power.

Stephen Beck, CEO of BenchMark Wireline Products said,

“In the future, with the combination of electric units and ac power on location, the result will be a zero-carbon footprint.”

RigLock® Insights from Evercore ISI Energy – Oilfield Services, Equipment, & Drilling

In the May 29th, 2018 report industry analysts praise widespread RigLock implementation for its potential to increase field level efficiencies resulting in significantly increased profit.

Renegade Service’s RigLock stats as of July 2018:

    • Used in major shale plays for 2 years, since mid 2016
    • 116,898 + operating hours
    • 45 units

    EVERCORE ISI Industry-wide Sample Results:

    • Generates 1+ stage per day.
    • Saves 20-30 mins/stage
    • Annualized EBITA spread increase $4-5 Million

    Renegade Services Results:

    • Generates 3+ stage per day.
    • Saves 30-45 mins/stage

“In a NAM oilfield environment where activity growth has steadied (yielding some near-term softness in the service spot market), it is up to the pressure pumpers to push the envelope on additional field-level efficiencies to drive incremental growth and profitability.” ¹

Renegade Services’ RigLock technology drives growth and profitability in two ways – significantly decreasing time between frac and wireline well swaps which results in stage increase per day and removing personnel from the red zone danger risk that comes with taking off and replacing the nightcap and lubricator assembly, 40 + feet in the air.

“All else equal, and assuming no additional bottlenecks appear with widespread adoption of RigLock, we simplistically believe the incremental 20-30 minutes between well swaps could yield an incremental 1-2 stages/day. Our sensitivity attributes this incremental stage to ~$4-5 million in annualized EBITDA per spread, well above the levels needed to comfortably hit the vast majority of our pressure pumping out-year profitability levels.” 1

After being field-tested for more than 2 years with Renegade Services clocking 100,000+ operating hours on more than 45 units, investment firms, E&P companies, and wireline professionals alike are consistently realizing the significance of adding an extra stage. The efficiency gains the Renegade team has been able to produce since the widespread implementation supports Evercore ISI Energy’s assumption about RigLock potential.

“Admittedly, we were initially alerted of the substantial efficiency benefits of the RigLock by our E&P counterparts, but upon further engagement with the vast majority of pressure pumpers within our coverage, we quickly learned that RigLock is gaining appreciable adoption momentum in the Permian (and excitement is palpable regarding the potential efficiency gains).” ¹

RigLock use has substantially increased in the Permian and other NAM shale plays in the last several months as pressure pumpers continue to report significant ROI in efficiency gains with RigLock despite the highly commoditized stigma of the current market. Renegade is the leading supplier of RigLock packages across the Marcellus and the Permian.

“Furthermore, it is our opinion that RigLock gains are very much a function of how efficient the particular E&P/service provider was before during well swap operations.” ¹

RigLock gains are definitely influenced by the level of service providers’ efficiency, and Renegade Services provides the expertise needed to maximize RigLock efficiency gains.

Renegade helped create RigLock and has the most worldwide field experience, Renegade Services ran the inaugural RigLock package, many competitors in the wireline arena choose Renegade crews for their RigLock work.  Renegade Services has broken records in efficiency completing more stages per day than ever before. We are the leading service provider for RigLock with the most in-depth maintenance program lead by our dedicated, FHE trained RigLock technicians.  RigLock has been on location for over 98,400 operating hours on more than 45 units (June 2018) with Renegade Services. You can trust our expert-trained wireline team for your project.

“Conclusion – too early to tell, but 20-30 minutes/swap could unlock an incremental stage/day and upwards of ~5.0 million in annualized EBTIDA/spread. All else equal, and assuming no additional bottlenecks appear with widespread adoption of RigLock, we believe the incremental 20-30 minutes between well swaps could, over the course of a day, yield an incremental 1-2 stages/day (in reality, the improved throughput places more strain on other parts of the completion value chain, so likely a naïve assumption to draw). On an annualized EBITDA basis, the RigLock efficiency gain is dependent on stage pricing, but we see a path toward upwards of $4-$5 million in EBITDA/year per spread.”

Renegade Services is the world’s leading RigLock service provider resulting in our crews achieving record gains of 3-4 stages/day with as low as 15 minutes between well swaps.

Given gaining 1 stage per day with RigLock can result in a 13% increase in EBITA and a potential annualized EBITA spread increase of $4 – 5 Million, would there be any reason you wouldn’t consider saving time and increasing profits with RigLock today?

Experience the Efficiency of ELDs: Streamline Your Operations and Improve Compliance

Todd Caughey became the Renegade Wireline Services HSE/DOT Compliance Supervisor after 25 years as a state trooper. Renegade Wireline Services, or RWLS, revolves around industries in the gas and oil field. They are based in Texas, but offer their services to both Texas and other states. With RWLS, Todd Caughey heads up compliance and safety with the company.

In 2014, RWLS began utilizing electronic logging. Due to his previous experience with the electronic logs, Caughey has a unique perspective on the new December electronic logging device mandate and how enforcement will ensue when it begins. “I knew what ELDs would do for us,” says Todd Caughey, “and ownership wanted to go this direction before it became mandatory.”

The company uses ELogs that allows for usage of existing tablets and smartphones because “Most everyone today has a smartphone.” Due to the easy accessibility, Caughey feels as though there was no need for an additional investment.

The only issue with the smartphone-accessible ELogs is that some enforcement officials are under the false impression that ELogs on cell phones were not authorized. “I’m seeing law enforcement [is] not knowledgeable on ELDs,” Caughey says. However, he says that even when he receives an incorrect ELD violation, he still ends up winning all of his DataQ challenges.

Despite this, the ELDs still make it much easier for operators to automatically log whichever regulations they operate under and organize the logs under the related rules. Before ELDs, “form and error” violations were being made in logbooks and hurting the CSA scores for RWLS. Now, however, this error is no longer an issue. Not only do logs automatically come in through ELDs, but also can oversee driver qualification files, inspections, tax reporting, and more. Caughey says he can also “pull the driver and it’ll list all his violations. Also on this ELD you’re able to submit your DVIRs electronically into the office.”

Switching over to ELDs “takes some time,” he says. “It was several months of some hurdles, but our violations have decreased dramatically.” Companies who’ve not switched over to ELDs yet could gain a lot and it helps to have a company that can help you through the transition.

    The Annual AESC Award

Committed to Safety: Renegade’s Award-Winning Approach in the Energy Industry

Every year, the Association of Energy Service Companies (AESC) awards a Gold, Silver, or Bronze award to energy companies with a high level of safety standards. Participating companies contribute to the overall understanding of safety statistics by volunteering their safety data. As a contributor for the past few years, Renegade has presented their information because they are deeply committed to the highest level of safety.

    How the AESC Award Works

Each year, the AESC award is determined by three factors. First, each participating company is categorized as either Well Servicing/Workover Rig or a Non-Well Servicing Rig Category. Second, the companies are then divided into groups depending on the number of hours that they reported. Finally, they award either Gold, Silver, or Bronze for each Group.

    Reported Hours Groups

The group determination by hours is key to recognizing the high standards of energy service companies of various sizes. The groups are determined as follows:

    • Group 1 reports 0 – 75,000 hours
    • Group 2 reports 75,001 – 150,000 hours
    • Group 3 reports 150,001 – 300,000 hours
    • Group 4 reports 300,001 – 2,500,000 hours
    • Group 5 reports anything greater than 2,500,001 hours

    Total Recordable Incident Rate

Within each group, the AESC award is determined by the Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) of each company. The participant with the lowest TRIR in a group receives the Gold, followed by the second lowest receiving the Silver, and the third lowest receiving the Bronze. The high standard for safety and a low number of incidents of every participating company is key to AESC’s mission for industry safety.

    Renegade’s Record of Safety

At Renegade, the commitment to safety is paramount. As a participant in AESC safety reporting, Renegade received the Silver Award in the Non-Well Servicing Rig in Group 4 in 2016. In the following year, Renegade’s continued work towards high safety standard was awarded a 2017 Gold in the same category and grouping.

Overall, as a wireline company in the energy industry, Renegade understands the importance of high safety standards and low incidents. By receiving the AESC awards in both 2016 and 2017, it is clear that a high level of safety is deeply important to Renegade as a whole.
